Dr. Joey Bernhardt Named Early Career Fellow by Ecological Society of America

We are proud to share that Dr. Joey Bernhardt, Assistant Professor and researcher with the Centre for Ecosystem Management (CEM) at the University of Guelph, has been named an Early Career Fellow by the Ecological Society of America (ESA). This prestigious five-year fellowship recognizes outstanding contributions by early-career ecologists in research, education, and community engagement.

Dr. Bernhardt’s research sits at the intersection of ecology, physiology, and global change biology. At the CEM, she leads a dynamic research program exploring how organisms—from microbes to fish—uptake and use energy and nutrients in changing environments. Her work sheds light on how biodiversity supports ecosystems that are both productive and resilient, with practical implications for climate adaptation, conservation, and food security.

This recognition from ESA highlights Dr. Bernhardt’s commitment to advancing ecological knowledge and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. She is also affiliated with the University of Guelph’s One Health Institute, where she works across disciplines to examine the connections between ecological integrity, animal health, and human well-being.

Dr. Bernhardt’s selection as an ESA Early Career Fellow reflects not only her innovative research but also her growing influence in shaping the future of ecology. We look forward to supporting her continued work at the Centre for Ecosystem Management and beyond.

Congratulations, Dr. Bernhardt, on this well-earned honour!
